What does your podiatrist do?

January 23, 2018

We get asked many times what a podiatrist actually does. Quite simply, we fix feet (#podsfixfeet).

Do we cut toenails? Yes. This is not all we do though. There are many more 'strings to our bow'.

In order to become a podiatrist, we go through a 3 year Bachelor of Science Degree course in Podiatry.  Even after this is completed, we have to maintain our skills and knowledge with regular updates every year.  At Fancy Feet, we go on many courses throughout the year and also keep up to date with online training, read journals and even attend monthly meetings held by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.

Our skill set expands way past just cutting toenails, although this is a big part of our job role.

Other things a podiatrist can help with includes:

  • Hard skin removal

  • Corn removal

  • Verruca treatments including debridement and needling procedures

  • Removal of ingrowing toenails

  • Administering local anaesthetic

  • Biomechanical assessments and gait analysis

  • Diabetic foot checks

  • Vascular checks - checking your blood flow to your lower limbs using an ultrasound machine called a doppler

  • Refer you on to other specialists such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, doctors, surgeons, diabetologists and specialist departments such as vascular and orthopaedic departments.

  • Give advice regarding footwear; fungal issues such as nails and athletes foot; general maintenance of feet; and any other issues that cause you foot pain

  • We treat babies; children, teenagers, and adults right through to the elderly. We also treat both men and women, which suprisingly some people are not aware of

If you have any pain in your feet at all, always remember that podiatrists are your go to specialists. Just like when you go to a dentist regarding your teeth.

Next time you hear the word podiatry or podiatrist, just remember, there is a lot more to our skill sets than just nail cutting.
